Malik's Sculpture Garden
Malik is an artist based in New York
I grew up in the Bay Area, studying ballet in San Francisco and New York, which has led me to my current digital media work at New York City Ballet. I like the challenge of analog photography; like performing ballet, it’s easy to mess up, but the payoff is great when you get it right.
These photos are from the Vigeland sculpture park in Oslo. I think I was taken with these figures because despite the smooth, rounded, symmetry in which they are wrought, they manage to convey a very human urgency. Their serenely menacing quality drew me in—it’s the quiet ones you have to look out for.
In taking photos, I am drawn to color, texture, sex, incidental mise en scène, architecture, and the human form. I almost always prefer photos taken in a natural moment to those I have staged, though I am interested in developing a still life practice. Challenges are good.
