Natalie's Uncurated Fem
Natalie O'Moore is a photographer and director based in New York City.
Employing a sharp feminine gaze, Natalie explores the tension between the hyperreal and the ephemeral. She often uses the backdrop of American suburban and ex-urban landscapes to construct stages for relationships to play out, emphasizing the psychological environment of her subjects. Inherit in the images is a sense of sparring contradictions eternally at odds, yet harmonious within a single frame: the beautiful and the melancholy, the masculine and the feminine.
I’ve been taking photos since I was a teenager, working mainly with 35mm color film and graduating to medium format. I graduated from NYU where I was really digging into photography as a means of personal expression and unlocking a deeper subconscious.
I was interested in photography’s unique ability to be a feminine art form in color and subject matter. I loved capturing the world around me and imprinting my own point of view onto moments, and seeing what came up when I looked at the images I had taken. It was a more surrealist way of working - I would see a moment, and capture it without thinking, and look back on that to unpack my automatic response to the world.
These photos I chose are a mix of images from the past five years - some from more editorialized shoots, others from raw moments in life. Most of them feel like ‘notes’ to me now - collecting scenes and feelings for images I went on to create later. I chose these because they’re not as curated as my work typically feels - they’re just images that I’ve taken over the years that have informed my work now. Now I’m more working on creating from my imagination rather than documenting what’s in front of me. It’s more planned out and stemming from an idea I have rather than the immediate moment.
